You know, those “New Years Resolutions” you set for yourself at the beginning of the year and then around this time of year you start to evaluate what worked and what didn’t work.
If you are like most purpose-driven entrepreneurs, setting and achieving goals is often easier said then done.
The thing that I find interesting is that although we may understand the basics or even the “secrets” that top athletes, and traditional business owners that is something missing….but first, let’s look at what they do have right and you can copy.
The basics really come down to the following:
- Motivation – connected to your WHY
Being focused helps us to plan and organize our resources, being specific allows us to clearly measure what we are doing as well as allocate the step by step, and resources, ie. being organized and planned. And of course, not much of anything happens without motivation, ie, your big why.
The why of the goal is really one of the most important aspects of setting the goal and being able to achieve it. You see the only thing really standing in the way of you reaching your goals is YOU. And this is where we start to get into the missing piece and why most purpose-driven folks are frustrated with setting goals that they know in their hearts are possible and yet still don’t seem to be making any headway.
The secret is YOU, well at least one of the secrets and the missing ingredient is you. We are not taught how to self-explore so when something goes haywire it’s usually the last place that we look for answers. The truth is, this should the first place you look for answers, funny how that works huh?
Setting clearly defined short term and long term goals will enable you to measure your progress and achieve personal satisfaction once you have successfully met your goals.
Charting your progress will also enable you to actually see the stages of completion leading to the actual realization of your goals. This eliminates the feeling of a long and pointless grind towards achieving your goal. Your self-confidence and level of competence will also improve as you will be more aware of your capabilities as you complete or achieve your goals.
The basics of goal settings will involve deciding what you really want to do with your personal life and what short term and long term goals you need to achieve it. Then you have to break down goals into the smaller and manageable targets that you must complete on your way to achieving your targets.
A good way to have a manageable list is to have a daily and weekly set of goals. By doing this you will be always in the position of going towards your life plan goals. Every day will give you the opportunity to fulfill a certain goal giving you the feeling of accomplishment.
Here are some pointers that should be taken into consideration in setting goals and achieving them.
Attitude plays a very big role in setting and achieving your goals. You must ask yourself if any part of you or your mind holding you back towards completing your simplest goals? If there is any part of your behavior that is being a hindrance or puts your plans into disarray? If you do have problems in these areas then the immediate thing to do is to address this problem.
This is hugely important and where YOU actually come into the equation of setting and achieving your goals, you see, you gotta really understand what is in the way. Attitude is important, but so is the underlying root belief and energy behind your behavior, miss this and usually miss your goals.
This is usually an area that can be tough to navigate on your own, so investing in yourself through the use of a good coach or mentor can pay off in high dividends and will help you to get unstuck fast.
As the saying goes -’All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, or something to that effect, is, by all means, true down to the last the letter. Having fun while achieving your goals should be non-negotiable, otherwise, you end up burning yourself out, not reaching your goals and being resentful.
If you have big goals and grand visions, and I suspect you do, then you want to start looking out from a 3-year vantage point for those big dreams and desires, then rein that in and start to create 30, 60 and 90-day action plans to help you get there. You go out to 3 years not because you are obsessed with looking that far into the future, but because it tends to make it a little easier to “believe” that in 3 years you can get “there”, then you can do it in a year!
One step at a time, step by step you can get there, when you know what is really stopping you from achieving your goal, you address that, dissolve that and then follow your tactical plan to get you there.
